The Raiser Review

Here is a wonderful review of the Waffle Ball 2012 Draft from our own Dan Raiser. Guest reporter Sam Levy has promised his review by Saturday. How great is this to have so many takes on the draft! Feel free to submit yours to me at philipjohn.cco@gmail.com if you wish to post a review as well! In the meantime, here's Dan's review.

Here’s my best shot at a round by round draft analysis.  I tried to be as objective as possible when selecting the “Nice Pick!” for each round, but obviously, my personal feelings toward the players bled through in both those and the comments.  Still, I hope you enjoy it and let me know if you anyone has any feedback or would like to submit a draft analysis or best pick list of their own.  Enjoy!

Round: 1
(1) Getherswag Goners ‑ Miguel Cabrera 1B
(2) Kings Parade Krusaders ‑ Jose Bautista 3B
(3) Chemical Bonds VII ‑ Albert Pujols 1B
(4) Dropkick Murphy's ‑ Adrian Gonzalez 1B
(5) ‑ HomeRunHero‑ ‑ Troy Tulowitzki SS
(6) Crazy Diamonds ‑ Evan Longoria 3B

(13) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Robinson Cano 2B
(14) Francouer Forever ‑ Ryan Braun LF
(15) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Hanley Ramirez SS

Nice Pick!: Ryan Braun at #14
Surprising Pick: Jose Bautista at #2
Comments:
It seems top tier first baseman were all the rage in Rd 1 this year, with the consensus top four options at the position all being drafted by pick #7.  I personally was really hoping to land one of these guys, and foolishly thought I had a chance at pick #10.  It was equally surprising to see the top pitcher not go until pick #9.  This wouldn’t be cause for comment in a typical draft, but our system more equally values hitting and pitching, so we have seen pitchers picked as high as #2 in past drafts.  The Gunslingers got pretty good value nabbing the top pitcher that late.  My call for best pick of the round, however, goes to the auto-drafting FF team.  You can definitely count me amongst the people surprised that the autodraft would land the steal of the first round, but getting a non-suspended reigning MVP (and top NL WBI point getter) this late in the first round is exactly that, a steal!  KPK passing over Pujols for Joey Bats at pick #2 raised my eyebrow a bit, but I’m guessing the 3B eligibility made the difference here.

Round: 2
(16) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Dustin Pedroia 2B
(17) Francouer Forever ‑ Jacoby Ellsbury CF
(18) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Jose Reyes SS
(19) Big Lake Owls ‑ Prince Fielder 1B
(20) World Series Cheesesteaks ‑ Felix Hernandez SP
 (21) ‑ Wonderboy‑ ‑ Ian Kinsler 2B

(23) Richmond Mariners ‑ Justin Upton RF
(24) Yukon Yakmen ‑ Carlos Gonzalez LF
(25) Crazy Diamonds ‑ Andrew McCutchen CF
(26) ‑ HomeRunHero‑ ‑ CC Sabathia SP
(27) Dropkick Murphy's ‑ Jered Weaver SP
(28) Chemical Bonds VII ‑ Cole Hamels SP
(29) Kings Parade Krusaders ‑ Dan Haren SP
(30) Getherswag Goners ‑ Yovani Gallardo SP

Nice Pick!: Tim Lincecum at #22
Surprising Pick: None
Comments:
Starting pitching really started to fly off the board in this round, highlighted by five consecutive picks to finish it off.  The best pick call was extremely tough this round as many of the SP options were good values this late, and Andrew McCutchen has the potential to be top three OF.  Overall, though I went with Lincecum at #22 as he still has the goods to be #1 at his position if things break the right way.  He could easily return a 1st round pick value this year.  Nothing really seemed surprising in this round, other than the pitching run was held off to later than usual.
Round: 3
(31) Getherswag Goners ‑ Dan Uggla 2B
(32) Kings Parade Krusaders ‑ Zack Greinke SP
(33) Chemical Bonds VII ‑ Hunter Pence RF
(34) Dropkick Murphy's ‑ Adrian Beltre 3B

(41) World Series Cheesesteaks ‑ Matt Holliday LF
(42) Big Lake Owls ‑ Shane Victorino CF
(43) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Ricky Romero SP
(44) Francouer Forever ‑ Giancarlo Stanton RF
(45) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Brandon Phillips 2B

Nice Pick!: Mark Teixeira at #35
Surprising Pick: Dan Uggla at #31
Comments:
This round flipped back to being position player heavy with 12 of the 15 picks being batters.  The split was dead even at six infielders and six outfielders, so it seems like everyone was mostly going with the best player available at the time.  HRH did a nice job to roster a solid 1B at pick #35.  He’s no longer considered an elite at the position, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he performs at that level again this year.  PnP also grabbed some great value getting solid 2B at the end of the round in Brandon Phillips.  I would have thought he would get picked before Dan Uggla who lead off the led off the round.  It seems obvious that GG believes the second half numbers for Uggla were the real ones.

Round: 4
(46) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Jimmy Rollins SS
(47) Francouer Forever ‑ David Wright 3B
(48) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Shin‑Soo Choo RF
(49) Big Lake Owls ‑ Pablo Sandoval 3B
(50) World Series Cheesesteaks ‑ Alex Rodriguez 3B
 (51) ‑ Wonderboy‑ ‑ Eric Hosmer 1B
(52) Gilead Gunslingers ‑ Jon Lester SP
(53) Richmond Mariners ‑ Ryan Zimmerman 3B
(54) Yukon Yakmen ‑ Michael Bourn CF
(55) Crazy Diamonds ‑ James Shields SP
(56) ‑ HomeRunHero‑ ‑ C.J. Wilson SP
(57) Dropkick Murphy's ‑ Matt Cain SP
(58) Chemical Bonds VII ‑ Ian Kennedy SP
(59) Kings Parade Krusaders ‑ Starlin Castro SS
(60) Getherswag Goners ‑ Ubaldo Jimenez SP

Nice Pick!: Eric Hosmer at #51
Surprising Pick: Jimmy Rollins at #46
Comments:
Round #4 saw the all the top tier 3B gobbled up with four going within seven picks.  A pair of SS were also selected thinning that position.  J-Roll at #46 seems like a bit of a reach, but it looks like PnP was trying to corner the market on middle infield positions.  I’m going to toot my own horn here with the pick of Hosmer at 1B.  He’s a bit of a question mark since this will be his first full season in the majors, but 1B options started to look a lot less appealing.  This is evidenced by the fact that another 1B would not be selected until 25 picks later.

Round: 5
(61) Getherswag Goners ‑ Alexei Ramirez SS
(62) Kings Parade Krusaders ‑ Matt Wieters C
(63) Chemical Bonds VII ‑ Jay Bruce RF
(64) Dropkick Murphy's ‑ David Ortiz DH
(65) ‑ HomeRunHero‑ ‑ Adam Wainwright SP
(66) Crazy Diamonds ‑ Matt Moore SP
(67) Yukon Yakmen ‑ Elvis Andrus SS
(68) Richmond Mariners ‑ Nelson Cruz RF
(69) Gilead Gunslingers ‑ Carl Crawford LF
 (70) ‑ Wonderboy‑ ‑ Carlos Santana C
(71) World Series Cheesesteaks ‑ Brett Lawrie 3B
(72) Big Lake Owls ‑ Jonathan Papelbon RP
(73) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Madison Bumgarner SP
(74) Francouer Forever ‑ Mike Napoli C
(75) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Josh Johnson SP

Nice Pick!: Elvis Andrus at #67
Surprising Pick: Matt Wieters at #62
Comments:
The first reliever came off the board in Round #5 with the Owls selecting Papelbon.  The first catcher of the draft also was selected, followed closely by two more.  Wieters going first at #62 seemed a little strange given that the consensus top two at the position are Santana and Napoli (both of which were selected later in the round).  It appears KPK is banking on the breakout that scouts have said is coming for quite a while now.  YAK gets pretty good value by closing off a SS tier with Andrus.  The next SS would not be selected for another 29 picks.  Carl Crawford is finally rostered by GGS.  This could end up being a great value if he gets anything close to his 2010 numbers.

Round: 6
(76) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Michael Young 1B
(77) Francouer Forever ‑ Alex Gordon LF
(78) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Lance Berkman 1B

(101) World Series Cheesesteaks ‑ Jayson Werth RF
(102) Big Lake Owls ‑ Adam Jones CF
(103) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Francisco Liriano SP
(104) Francouer Forever ‑ B.J. Upton CF
(105) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Brian Wilson RP

Nice Pick!: Brian McCann at #87, Asdrubal Cabrera at #98
Surprising Picks: Daniel Hudson at #85, Adam Jones at #102
Comments:
Team WB was the first by far to fill a UTIL slot by drafting Billy Butler at #81.  I’m hoping he gains 1B eligibility sooner rather than later.  The Murphys end a run at C by selecting McCann with pick #87. This is great value since it wouldn’t really surprise anyone if he ended up being the best catcher this year.  The autopick also grabs a rare steal by selecting Asdrubal Cabrera with pick #98.  After him and Jeter (who was selected next) the SS position gets pretty hazy.  Daniel Hudson seemed to go a little early at #85, especially considering Mat Latos (who was almost a Nice pick!) was still on the board at the time.  Adam Jones also seemed a bit of a reach.  He is a good bet to provide the lion’s share of the offense in Baltimore, but the question of exactly how much that will end up being is one we will have to wait and see for.

(133) Ship Cool Papas ‑ Alex Avila C
(134) Francouer Forever ‑ Rafael Betancourt RP
(135) PumpsPinstripes 'n Pampers ‑ Heath Bell RP

Nice Pick!: Howard Kendrick at #118, Alex Avila at #133
Surprising Picks: Emilio Bonifacio at #121, Ryan Howard at #122
Comments:
There appeared to be an unspoken consensus to wait on OF in these rounds, as only 4 of the 30 selections were for that position.  It was pretty mixed otherwise, though relief pitching started to go at a slightly faster clip.  CB7 got some good value by grabbing Howie Kendrick at pick #118.  Not only was he one of the last good 2B left, but he’ll also be hitting in front of some Pujols guy this year.  The Papas also scored a very solid catcher at pick #133 in Avila.  This definitely closed a tier as the next catcher would not be selected for 54 picks!   Bonifacio seemed to be a bit of a reach, but with his position flexibility and Ozzie Gullien’s tendency to give speedsters the green light, there is a good chance he could still be a value here.  Howard went a little earlier than expected as well, but even a half season of his production could justify this pick.

Nice Pick!: Kendrys Morales at #138, Johnny Cueto at #165
Surprising Picks: Addison Reed at #145, Neftali Feliz at #159
Comments:
Relievers started to go pretty quickly in these rounds, with six selections (seven if you count Feliz).  Combined with 10 SP picks, pitching seemed to be the focus of many teams at this point.  Round 10 marked the round when the auto-draft finally decided to grace both FF and RM with their first starting pitcher.  Although FF chose first, I think RM got a better deal by getting Marcum over Pineda giving the latter’s questionable spring.  The Papas took a chance by grabbing Morales much earlier than he was ranked, and with Morales clear to play opening day, this seems to have been a good call (even it just meant they were able to trade him away at a higher value).  PnP grabbing Cueto at the end of Rd 11 puts them in a position to get some good value there as Cueto has flashed ace potential.  My pick of Prado also seems to have been timely based on the fact that the next two 3B off the board would be 27 and 71 picks later.

Surprising Picks: Jonathon Niese at #171, Brandon Belt at #181, Stephen Drew at #200,
Comments:

These rounds saw a bunch of high risk, high reward players being taken, including Gordon Beckham, Colby Rasmus, Chris Carpenter, Justin Morneau, Adam Dunn, Stephen Drew, and the enigma that is Ricky Nolasco.  With the exception of Drew (who was probably taken a little higher due to position scarcity), I don’t think any of these guys are a reach at this spot, and it will be interesting to see how they all play out throughout the year.  My pick of Jonathon Niese, however, was almost certainly a reach.  He could very well break out this year, but if he goes the bust route, my pitching staff is a little thin to say the least.  Brandon Belt also seemed to go a little early considering he has nowhere to play currently, but if he finds at-bats, he could end up being a steal here.  Speaking of steals, Marco Scutaro was definitely one as he had a solid season last year and now will play half his games at Coors Field.  I also think Brandon League was a good pick here as he is pretty safe as far as closer go, but cost only a 13th round pick.  He is currently tied for the league lead in saves!  Jeff Francoeur was also a good value at pick #209.  Yes he might regress some this year, but what if he doesn’t?  Certainly worth a 14th rd pick to find out.

Surprising Picks: Delmon Young at #215, Daniel Bard at #219
Comments:
These rounds appeared to be where many teams decided to finally fill that nagging infielder spot they had neglected.  Of these picks, I think the Gunslingers selection of Edwin Encarnacion has the best chance to return a profit.  I personally immediately regretted trying to wait one more round for him.  WIZ also was able to grab some good value with getting likely Red’s closer Sean Marshall.  If he ends up sticking in the role all year, this is a great spot to have nabbed him.  The Owls were also able to get a quality starter late by grabbing Cahill in Round 17.  He fell off a bit towards the end of last year, but the potential is definitely still there, and he is pitching for a better team now (albeit in a less pitcher friendly environment).  This late it is tough to really call something a reach, but Delmon Young went before some guys who seem like they have higher potential.  Daniel Bard is a big time wild card, but, again, it’s not that big of a risk to grab him at this point and hope for the best.

Round #18 had several selections that I thought were Nice Pick! worthy.  Big Z, Jurrjens, and Allen Craig all have some good potential for a late pick.  I probably would have given it to YAK for the Zambrano selection outright, but HRH was able to flip Jurrjens for a Round 6 selection in Alex Gordon, increasing his value.  Even without that, though, Jurrjens has shown ace level production when healthy so he has good value in his own right.  I ended up having it be a tie between Big Z and Jurrjens, with Craig (seems all he does is hit homers) right behind.  Cozart’s breakout potential at a thin position gave him top honors in Rd. 19, and Doumit can be a very sneaky good source of points as he has many ways to get into the Twins lineup while maintaining his C eligibility.  I’ll also give some props to the autopick for getting some good potential picks in Sanchez, Altuve, Chipper Jones (still has value!), and Jansen.

Comments:
At this point in the draft, it is all about upside, and HRH got just that grabbing a likely closer in Rd 21 (Greg Holland).  Round 22 was a tough one to call as there was surprising little upside.  Bryce Harper has (by far) the most per game potential of all the picks in this round, but Viciedo has a chance to take that next step this year too, and he will be in the majors from Day 1.  I guess I couldn’t be surprised if the best value of this round ended up being Bartolo Colon (aka Big Fat Bartolo Colon), though, as he was impressive in his Japan start.  OK, that’s a lie, I can definitely be surprised.  In Round 23 GG manages to actually land a 2B with decent potential, which is impressive this late in the game.  Josh Reddick was also almost the pick here, and Brian Roberts might actually be valuable if he can get back on the field (and stay there) relatively early in the season.  As for the last round, it was a pretty easy call to give the Nice Pick! nod to the Diamonds for selecting Presley.  Judging by the draft chat, there were at least two teams hoping to pick him up after sliding a player to their DL spot (WB and Papas), plus another team who had him queued up to draft (HRH).  He did some very good things for the Pirates last year before getting hurt, and is not hard at all to envision him outperforming his draft slot.   Though it is hard to have a real surprise pick in these rounds, the fact that Manny Ramirez found himself on a roster at the end of the draft was certainly not expected given his looming 50 game suspension.  This was modified pretty much directly after the draft, however, when Ramirez was swapped out by HRH.

Well, there it is.  Hope you enjoyed it and good luck to everyone this season!!
